Artist Robert Smithson, who created Spiral Jetty, died during his project Amarillo Ramp.
He went up in a small plae to view the site, and crashed. The earthwork was later built by his widow, Nancy Holt.
It is on private land, and we were lucky to be taken down a crisscross of rough roads to see it. Rocks were painted green by perhaps an overly enthusiastic tor guide.
Left to deteriorate for decades,it is returning to the llano from which it sprang.
