Monday Poem: why can’t i by Sophie Sagan-Gutherz

why can’t i

you ask:
when do birds fly
all alone?

i ask:
how do birds
breathe?

how can they still
beat their tired wings?

how do they maintain
breath
and decisively head
north?

i barely
can jog for
more than five
minutes

i barely
can talk to
you in a stupid suburb Starbucks for
more than five
seconds

once a bird told me
“stop calling my pills
Atarax
it sounds too close to
Ativan”

do birds take
Zoloft?
do birds feel like they’re
drowning?

it must be so exhausting to always fly away
it must be so lucky to always fly away

  1. I’ve added this from Facebook in case you want to respond here, Sophie–
Audrey Erin Wiggins: What kind of birds? And how drowning? Keep up the writing. It really helps a lot.

    • This poem came from a writing prompt that said to include birds, so there was no specific bird I thought of when writing this. When I speak of drowning, I am referring to the difficulty to breathe.

Thank you so much – I hope there are many poems to come!
