Fairy Tale Tanka by Stella Reed

Red Shoes Tanka

Over landmines
in places forbidden
she dances until
her feet turn red, legs replaced
by the executioner

Stella adds: I’m taking a persona class with Veronica Golos. We’ve been studying fairytale. The last class was about the story of the Red Shoes. I wanted to find a form that was succinct and yet worked with this story and beyond, making it current and political. Thus, the Red Shoes Tanka.
