Braids: A Pantoum by Jennifer Dickerson

Braids

The girl’s hair continued to grow
The ends tangled in the wind
Her brush caught, tears flowed
Braids were her only friends

The ends tangled in the wind
She grimaced with the pain
Braids were her only friends
Her desire began to wane

She grimaced with the pain
His eyes looked through her face
Her desire began to wane
He held himself against her waist

His eyes looked through her face
Now he had the power
He held himself against her waist
Her braided bun, a flower

Now he had the power
His force, his strength, her wilted
Her braided bun, a flower
He left her crying, jilted

His force, his strength, her wilted
Her breath caught, tears flowed
He left her crying, jilted
The girl’s hair continued to grow
