Appomattox–Poem & Photographs by Miriam Sagan

A visit to the historic site–suitably on Memorial Day.

This poem is both about it directly, and about something more personal:

Appomattox

What if I waited
and you never returned
red flash of cardinal

What if I waited
and you never returned
wet tailless skink

What if I waited
and you never returned
locked church
bend in the road
a story of fame

What if I waited
and you never returned
sleep, death, salamander

What if you waited
and I never returned
in shame
in the shadow
of the crisscrossed swords
of surrender?
